  2. nervous system, occurring in young or middle
  3. adulthood. It is characterized by
  4. degeneration of the myelin sheath that
  5. surrounds nerves in the brain and spinal
  6. cord. It is also known as disseminated
  7. sclerosis. Its cause is unknown. Depending on
  8. where the demyelination occurs - which nerves
  9. are affected - the symptoms of MS can mimic
  10. almost any neurological disorder. Typically
  11. seen are unsteadiness, ataxia (loss of
  12. muscular coordination), weakness, speech
  13. difficulties, and rapid involuntary movements
  14. of the eyes. The course of the disease is
  15. episodic, with frequent intervals of
  16. remission.
